A great example of polyptoton, nevermind the fact that it's freakin' hilarious.
One of the best examples of polyptoton outside of Shakespeare is the second half of the prayer of St. Francis:
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
In fact, the whole of the prayer is jam-packed with various figures-in syllables, words and clauses. It would be a great exercise to analyze it for us. Hint. Hint.
Duck, you scare me. Here I am trying to get down the basics, and you've got polyptoton's in your pocket! Once I actually KNOW a few of the figures, you're right--it would be fun to take up a classic text and analyze it.
